Couples Therapy
Intensives in the East Bay

Weekly therapy works, but it is slow. Fifty minutes, once a week, and half of it spent catching up on the week that just passed. For some couples that pace is fine. For others, especially busy partners with packed calendars, it can take months to reach the conversation that actually matters. A couples intensive compresses that work into a focused block of time, so you gain traction fast.

At Sex Solutions Therapy, intensives are built for committed partners who would rather do concentrated, meaningful work than stretch it across a year of appointments.

What a couples
intensive is

An intensive is an extended therapy session, or a series of them across a day or two, usually several hours at a time. Rather than stopping right as you reach something important, you stay with it. The longer format lets you move through the conflict, reach the deeper layer underneath it, and practice something new before you leave, all in one sitting.

What couples come
in to work on

Intensives suit a wide range of situations. Some couples come after an affair or a breach of trust and want focused repair rather than a year of weekly sessions. Some are stuck in the same fight on a loop and want to reach what is underneath it. Some have grown sexually or emotionally distant and want to reconnect on purpose. Some are facing a big transition, a move, a new baby, a change in the relationship structure, and want steady support through it. And some simply want a deep, concentrated tune-up before things get harder.

The structure and
session flow

A typical intensive runs in three stages:

  • Assessment before the intensive. Intake questionnaires, and often a shorter meeting, so your therapist arrives already understanding your history, your goals, and the pattern you keep hitting. No time is lost on day one.

  • The intensive itself. Several focused hours, with breaks, spent naming the cycle you are stuck in, working through the charged material, and learning tools you can use in real time. This is where the bulk of the change happens.

  • Integration afterward. One or more follow-up sessions to reinforce what shifted, troubleshoot what came up at home, and make the gains stick.

The pace of progress

The format removes the weekly restart, so an intensive can move through what might otherwise take two or three months of standard sessions. Couples often reach the root of a recurring fight, understand each other’s nervous-system reactions, and leave with a shared language for what happens between them. The point is not speed for its own sake. It is depth without the constant stop-and-start.

What you leave with

The goal is not a nice conversation you forget by the weekend. Couples typically leave an intensive with a clear picture of the cycle they get caught in, language for their own and each other’s reactions, and a few concrete tools they have already practiced in the room. The follow-up sessions exist to keep those gains alive once daily life resumes.

Is an intensive right
for you?

Is an intensive right for you?

  • Both partners want to be there and are ready to work

  • You have a specific issue or recurring pattern you want to move on

  • Your schedules make weekly appointments hard to sustain

  • You want a jump-start, on its own or before beginning ongoing therapy

An intensive is usually not the right starting point when there is active, untreated addiction, when one partner has not agreed to take part, or when there is abuse or a safety concern in the relationship. In those cases we will point you toward the right support first. Being honest about fit up front means the couples who book are the ones ready to get something out of it.

A note on logistics

Intensives are scheduled in advance and priced as a package rather than by the single session, since they include the pre-work and the follow-up. We will lay out the full structure, timing, and cost during your consultation so there are no surprises. Most insurance plans do not reimburse intensives the same way they handle standard sessions, and we will be transparent about that up front.

The short version: An intensive trades the slow weekly drip for focused, concentrated work. For committed, busy partners, it is often the fastest honest route to real change.
